With the winter rainy season upon us, all the wet and snowy weather can lead to increased risk of floods. In addition to obtaining flood insurance, homeowners should also know how to prepare their homes for a flood.

Protect your possessions - If a flood occurs, there is a chance that the possessions inside of a home could be damaged. That said, people need to take the necessary steps to protect these items. Creating a personal flood file of all possessions is essential so people will be able to receive the correct amount of money from their insurance company if these items are damaged.

For example, homeowners should create a file of all valuable possessions, such as major appliances and electronics. Included in the file should be serial numbers and store receipts so they have proof of purchase. This document should be kept in a safe deposit box or waterproof container, so it can be used should people ever need to file a claim.

Additional possessions that should be protected include critical documents and financial records, such as mortgages, insurance policies, Social Security cards and passports.

Get your home ready - In addition to securing all possessions, people will need to get their home ready for a possible flood. The first step that should be taken is to ensure the sump pump is working. It may be smart to get a battery-operated back up just in case the power goes out.

Additionally, homeowners will want to clear any debris that may have built up in gutters and downspouts. Moving furniture, valuable and important documents to a safe place that won't be affected by flood waters is also recommended.

Furnaces, water heaters, washers and dryers also need to be protected. This can be done by placing them on cement blocks that stand at least 12 inches above the area's projected flood elevation.

Other steps that need to be taken include anchoring fuel tanks and raising electrical components above the projected flood elevation.

Create an emergency plan - After securing possessions and prepping their house, people should develop an emergency plan for their family. This will ensure that everyone knows what to do should a flood occur.

One of the main components of the plan should be creating a safety kit with drinking water, canned food, a first aid kid, blankets and a flash light. Having emergency phone numbers accessible is also important.

Once this plan is created it could be beneficial to practice an evacuation route, so everyone will be prepared.
